ORGANIC ORANGES CONTAIN MORE VITAMIN C
American research has revealed that organic oranges contain a huge amount of vitamin C more than non-organic oranges.
Organic oranges contain 30% more vitamin C than those sprayed with pesticides. This is according to a report released at the Great Lakes Regional meeting of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society. Theo Clark, professor of biochemistry at Truman State University (Kirksville, Mo), reported the results of a study he himself conducted “to fill a gap, the lack of analytical data on the nutritional content of ‘organicall gro
"Often, organic fruits and vegetables come from small to medium-sized companies with labels such as ‘healthy’, ‘delicious’, or ‘natural’, generally without references to scientifically comparable standards. Clark chose oranges, as the first study target, because they are a “high-profile”fruit. "Orange is the traditional source of vitamin C, it has a very large world market, yet no one had yet compared the ‘nutritionals’ values of an ‘organic’ and a conventional orange”.
The latter are generally larger than the organic ones, and have a more marked color. Given the size “ "one could expect at least twice as much vitamin C in those oranges". Instead, analyzes (chemical isolation combined with spectroscopy(NMR-nuclear magnetic resonance) revealed that biological oranges have at least 30% more vitamin C, despite being smaller on average…
Why Organic Oranges Contain More Vitamin C
The reason for this added value is unclear, but”it can be assumed that growers use nitrogen fertilizers that cause greater assimilation of water, which could ‘dilute’ the vitamin contents of the fruit". These results are important. Those who buy fruits and vegetables have the right to know which fruit is nutritionally better.
