Goodbye Italian lemons. The yellow fruits at risk, in 30 years decreased production by 40%.
In about 30 years the agricultural area invested in limone has decreased by 45% and production by 41%. There are several reasons. First of all of an economic nature. Imports from Argentina reached record levels.
The Italian lemon, although of unsurpassed quality, does not stand the competition of cheap fruits.
The decline is also associated with the spread of ’dry sore’, a disease considered highly destructive. Sangaspano in this framework and despite facing much difficulty continues to plant lemon trees in Milazzo in the north of Sicily in contrada religione.
In the organic lemon grove where thousands of trees of white orange blossom varieties are already grown, 700 saplings have been planted and many more are planned to be planted.
