The 2025/2026 olive oil campaign is positive with rising prices. More consumers are choosing organic oil.
The situation of the Italian market for the 2025/2026 olive oil campaign is stable. Italian olive oil production is expected to reach 280-300 thousand tons, up from 240 thousand tons in the previous season.
The year has been influenced by heat and drought, especially in the south, and by the olive fruit fly in the central and northern regions. On the retail market front for high-quality extra virgin olive oil, in Northern Italy, prices in Liguria start at 15 euros/liter at the mill and producer level, with very little product available.
Similar prices are seen around Lake Garda. Moving down to Umbria and Tuscany, prices fall slightly to a range of 12-15 euros/liter, depending on the production area. In the Chianti and Siena areas, prices are traditionally higher than in the Maremma region. Similarly, in the Spoleto area, prices are higher compared to the Martani Hills. A similar situation exists in Lazio, with Sabina being slightly less expensive than the Latina area, home of the fragrant Itrana, which reaches prices of 15 euros per liter.
There is little oil in Marche, where prices also start at 15 euros per kilogram. Prices decrease as you move south, with quotations of 10-12 euros per liter in Campania, Abruzzo, and also in Basilicata and Puglia. More 10 than 12 euros per kilogram in Calabria, while in Sicily prices reach levels comparable to Northern Italy: 10-15 euros per kilogram depending on the production areas.
Many factors influence the prices of good non-organic extra virgin olive oil, and it is immediately evident that the consumer price per liter cannot drop below 13.00-14.00 euros, in cans and ex-mill. Purchasing oil at a lower price definitely means buying oil that is not extra virgin and not 100% Italian. The prices of certified organic oil are On average, about 20% higher due to lower production and the controls required for an oil to be certified organic. Consumers often wonder what the right price for extra virgin olive oil is and fear being cheated whether buying at a high or low price.
Unfortunately, this is possible, but building a relationship of trust with the producer can help in purchasing a quality product. In this context, Sangaspano records a stable production of organic extra virgin olive oil with the Nocellara and Biancolilla varieties, which analyses show have a very low acidity level and excellent flavor quality.
